English 1020: What I think of Poetry

I was amazed at how much feeling that was projected in their voices as they read their poems. I never thought that maybe our experiences, things that we have seen, and things that we feel could become a poem. Poetry is beautiful in my eyes, every poem has a message, whether it's hidden or clearly expressed. I can't write poetry whatsoever, but I do the same type of thing with the short stories I write. I think that inside every poem there is a story. Whether it's about love, hate or an issue we feel strongly about. Symbols, in my opinion, are just used to either represent our feelings, or to represent ourselves. We could write about something as simple as the trees outside.

I liked the poems we read on poetry. A lot of different people had different opinions on the different poems. When I read the poem I was assigned to work on, at first I couldn't figure out some of the things he used to symbolize different points that he was trying to make. When he referred to love as leaning grass and then made a reference to two lights, I thought he was trying to use those references as a form of disguising the fact that he was trying to use the cliche of finding the one we are meant to be with for eternity. In the part that talks about how memory fades and the open door and the maple leaf, I thought of my great grandfather. who has Altzheimer's disease and of how fast his memory faded in just a short time.

I didnt understand at all what the author was talking about. it seemed like he wanted everyone to live simple lives, but in today's society we can't lead a simple life because we act like if all of our technology disappeared that it would be the end of life as we knew it. I don't think he realized how much we depend on technology and how lost we would be without it.
